For some, storytelling is a natural as breathing. They can take anything – products, services, experiences – and turn them into a great story that grabs an audience’s attention, and leaves them with no option other than to do exactly what is asked. For others, the idea of writing a story about themselves or their business is about as fun as getting a root canal. But did you know creating storytelling for your brand, blog or business can be fun — and done in 3 easy steps? No, really – it can.
Maybe you’ve heard me say this before: Everyone has a story. It’s true. That story can be personal, professional, inspiring, informational, actionable, make-believe, sad, happy, romantic, mysterious, and even futuristic. Story categories are endless. If you are building a brand, writing a blog, or creating a business, the best way to get your message out and position yourself to your ideal audience is through storytelling.
Now, I realize there may be some naysayers out there that believe storytelling is just for kids, not business, and certainly not for what they’re selling. I couldn’t disagree more. Storytelling for business is one of the most effective ways to reach your target audience and appeal to their vulnerabilities. And once you’ve done that – you’ve got them right where you want them – making a purchase and putting cash in your bank account. Score!
Thanks in large part to the wonderful world wide web putting everything at our finger tips, and the explosion of social media, today’s consumers crave connecting with the people they buy products and services from and do business with. And what better way for a business to accomplish this then through storytelling.
Maybe you think because you sell garden hoses and wheel burrows, your story is boring. Or maybe you don’t think you have a story at all. Please let me remind you friends: Everyone has a story (there I go repeating myself again) – and that includes you, your business, your brand and your blog. Seriously. I’m not joking. We’re friends now – and friends don’t let friends go story-less.
How can I tell if I have a story?
Before we talk about how to create your story – and I give you a free goodie to help you get the ball rolling – I want you to take a look at the following and determine if you’re currently doing any with your brand, blog or business. And if you’re not, can you start – today?
- Do you resonate with your customers on a personal level so he/she feels a real connection to you, your products or offerings?
- Have you identified a client’s personal struggle and offered a great solution to their existing or perceived problem?
- Are you able to inspire, encourage and give a feeling of hope or happiness with your offering?
- Have you solidified trust between you and your customers with your brand?
- Are you demonstrating authority and expertise with your brand, blog or business promise?
If you answered yes to even one of these points – raise the roof, you’re on your way to a creating a great story! And even if you sort of answered yes to any of these questions, you’re heading in the right direction.
